The final round of voting for the Oscars began last week. Currently, numerous members of the Academy are focusing on the crucial task of determining who will be the winners and losers at the upcoming ceremony next month. As always, their choices are likely to be influenced by the ongoing succession of smaller award shows that have been occurring in recent weeks. Therefore, many categories are essentially predictable at this stage. It is expected that Oppenheimer will take home the best picture award, while Robert Downey Jr. is the strong favorite for the best supporting actor. Unfortunately, Barbie may have a disappointing night, and the most negative people you follow on Instagram will undeniably make a big deal about it.

However, there is one group that remains undetermined. The top female actor prize is currently being contested by two strong contenders. Lily Gladstone not only stole the attention from internationally renowned actors in Killers of the Flower Moon, but her victory would also be incredibly significant; a milestone for Native American representation in film that could help to reverse years of one-dimensional portrayals. And then there is Emma Stone. Stone is keen to mention that she indulged in numerous cakes.

“Indeed, there were other aspects of her performance in Poor Things that must be acknowledged. Her character demanded a high level of theatricality that would be challenging for most actors. She had to master an English accent, display a gradual but fluid change in physicality and speech, and navigate the mental difficulties that come with filming numerous intimate scenes. In a different year, she would undoubtedly win the Oscar. However, the competition is fierce this year, so every little detail she shares may sway in her favor. This is likely why Stone wants to ensure that we are aware she truly did indulge in a significant amount of cake.”

At a panel during the celebration for nominees for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures in Los Angeles over the weekend, Stone mentioned the sex scenes in Poor Things as easy compared to the scenes where she had to consume 60 cakes, which was quite challenging. She shared that having a closed set and an intimacy coordinator present made the sex scenes more comfortable. However, she also expressed the difficulty of walking and eating 60 Portuguese tarts, saying the first one is enjoyable but by the end, she wanted to vomit.

To put it simply, consuming 60 Portuguese custard tarts is a substantial amount for anyone. From a nutritional standpoint, it is quite a feat. It is hoped that the production team for Poor Things held themselves to higher standards, as one pastry from Pret contains 157 calories. When multiplied by the amount Stone consumed, the total comes to 9,420 calories. This is almost five times the recommended daily intake for adults, just from eating tarts. To put it in perspective, this is the same as eating 22kg of blueberries, 30 Filet-O-Fish sandwiches, or one and a half Sainsbury’s Birthday Celebration Mega Chocolate Tray Bake Cakes. If you have the chance, take a look at the size of one of these cakes at Sainsbury’s. Stone consumed the equivalent of more than one of those cakes, all in the name of her artistic performance.

Stone’s revelation about his experience with a custard tart can be compared to the recent news of Russell Crowe breaking his legs while filming Robin Hood and Sylvester Stallone breaking his neck during the making of The Expendables. These incidents highlight the dedication of artists who are willing to push their physical limits in order to satisfy their audience. Unfortunately, all three suffered as a result – Crowe experienced years of pain, Stallone’s injury marked the end of his action career, and Stone likely had to endure discomfort for several hours afterwards.

Did Gladstone do this for Flowers of the Killer Moon? Was there a scene where she ate 12 big bowls of mashed potato? No. And so, for this reason alone, it is clear that Stone deserves the best actress Oscar this year. And if she doesn’t, someone sign that woman up for a Man v. Food remake asap.
