Chelsea has successfully recruited Sam Jewell from Brighton to join their recruitment team in a senior role.
Jewell has stepped down from his position as Brighton’s head of recruitment. He was appointed to this role after Paul Winstanley left for Stamford Bridge 16 months ago. Jewell is expected to complete his notice period before beginning his new job in November.
The 34-year-old was enticed to embark on a fresh opportunity after receiving an offer for a worldwide position within Chelsea’s multi-club operation. Chelsea has implemented significant changes internally since being acquired by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital in 2022 and is focused on establishing their co-sporting directors, Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, as the core of their operation.
Jewell’s appointment coincides with the pending arrival of Josh Marsh as Chelsea’s new loans manager. For the past year, Chelsea has prioritized the acquisition of young players, and despite some uneven outcomes, they remain confident in the approach led by Winstanley and Stewart, believing it will ultimately yield positive results.
One of the main goals is to increase the use of data in scouting and strengthen the analytics team. It comes as no shock that Chelsea has turned to Brighton’s approach in this aspect. Brighton has consistently outperformed expectations due to their strategic recruitment methods.
In September 2022, Chelsea hired multiple individuals from Brighton. Graham Potter, who was previously with Brighton, joined Chelsea as their manager and brought along his support staff. However, Potter was let go in April 2023, but some of his coaching team chose to stay with Chelsea. Kyle Macaulay continues to work in a recruiting position while Ben Roberts remains as the goalkeeping coach. Roberts played a crucial role in Chelsea’s acquisition of goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic last year.
Brighton has profited greatly from their dealings with Chelsea, having sold Marc Cucurella, Moisés Caicedo, and Robert Sánchez to the club within the last two years.
Jewell, the son of Paul, a former manager for Wigan Athletic and Bradford City, played a role in facilitating Caicedo’s transfer to Brighton. Caicedo was sold for £115m last summer. Jewell also aided in identifying the Argentina midfielder, Alexis Mac Allister. At Brighton, his duties will be taken on by Mike Cave, the club’s assistant technical director, and George Holmes, the scouting and intelligence manager.
