I believe that the prime minister should have promptly called Tony Burke and strongly reprimanded him for not condemning Hamas and using mild language, as it sends a negative message.
The government should have a unified stance of condemning Hamas currently, but instead there are individuals acting on their own accord.
Tony Burke is prioritizing his own constituents in his electorate instead of acting in the best interest of the nation, which is a source of shame for him.
During a Friday interview on ABC Radio National, Burke expressed that the October 7th attack was terrible and deserved condemnation from both parliament and himself. He also stated that condemning Hamas does not diminish the significance of recognizing the loss of life among Palestinians during the conflict that followed.
120 nations, including New Zealand and France, showed their support for the cause, while only 14, including the US and Israel, opposed it. Additionally, 45 countries, such as Australia, the UK, Germany, India, and Canada, chose not to vote.
Australia’s delegate to the United Nations, James Larsen, stated that his country supports the resolution and reiterated the need for a temporary ceasefire to provide essential supplies to those in Gaza. However, Larsen expressed disappointment in Australia’s decision to abstain from voting due to the omission of Hamas as responsible for the terrorist attack on October 7th.
When questioned about the issue on Sky News today, Dutton stated that Australia should have been showing support for Israel by standing with our long-standing allies, including the US.
Dutton stated that the United States is Australia’s most crucial ally and that they should not hesitate when it comes to making difficult choices.
The prime minister had a chance at the United Nations to convey our values and stance, but he did not pass the test.

During a pre-recorded interview with Sky News, the prime minister was questioned about any messages regarding relations with China that Biden may have conveyed during their meetings in Washington DC last week. Biden responded on Thursday by recommending that Australia adopt a “trust but verify” approach to the Chinese government’s statements.
In an interview with Sky News, Albanese stated that while Australia and China have distinct political systems and values, efforts are being made to improve the stability of their relationship.
President Biden has expressed his approval of my upcoming meeting with President Xi in China. It is crucial for Australia to maintain a stable relationship with China, which is also a goal of the US.
Albanese pointed out that American officials were in talks with Chinese officials, which is a positive development.
