Daisy Ridley has expressed that she is still bothered by the criticism she received for her role in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, even after almost five years since the movie’s premiere.
Ridley appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, where she addressed the response to the 2019 film. She expressed her disappointment, stating that she did not want fans to feel like the film did not do justice to their expectations. She noted that while the first film was well received, the second film was met with a lot of controversy. Despite this, her own feelings towards the film remained unchanged.
JJ Abrams directed The Rise of Skywalker, the ninth installment in the Star Wars “Skywalker saga”. It followed the successful release of Abrams’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015 and the mixed response to Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 2017. The Rise of Skywalker is considered the least successful of the “sequel trilogy” in the Skywalker saga, with a worldwide revenue of $1.08 billion (and a relatively low $515 million in North America). Daisy Ridley portrayed Rey in all three films.
Horowitz inquired about the “kiss moment” between Rey and Kylo Ren (portrayed by Adam Driver), asking Ridley for her thoughts. Ridley responded that she felt it was well-deserved and what stood out to her was the intention behind it. She believed it was a farewell, which felt earned. She also expressed that the scene was filled with emotion and it was as if she was saying goodbye to the job as well.
Ridley mentioned that during filming of the last scene, she became emotional and began to cry because it felt like a true farewell.
In a 2019 interview with GQ, Ridley discussed the pressure of working on the Star Wars movies and revealed that it took a toll on her physical health. She shared that she experienced digestive problems and underwent tests that showed her body was not absorbing nutrients properly, leading to exhaustion and a significant weight loss.
Actress Ridley has been cast as Rey in an upcoming Star Wars movie, which will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Initially unsure about accepting the role offered by producer Kathleen Kennedy, Ridley expressed her excitement for the project in a recent interview with Variety. She praised Obaid-Chinoy’s previous work and described the director’s storyline as “cool” and “amazing”. Ridley also mentioned that she was given a full summary of the story and was thoroughly impressed, leading her to confidently accept the job.
