“Being known as a guitarist in Belgium may not be the most impressive title, but Vitja Pauwels has gained recognition beyond his country with his unique blend of electric and acoustic guitar playing, accompanied by electronic effects. This was showcased in his 2022 album, Drift By/Sink In. Pauwels and his new quartet had the opportunity to perform with his personal guitar hero, the well-known Marc Ribot, who has collaborated with renowned musicians like Tom Waits and Robert Plant. After being approached by Pauwels, Ribot agreed to a one-time performance at a festival in Mechelen, with Pauwels specifying that there would be no rehearsals except for a soundcheck.”
The outcome, performed live, showcases a carefree collaboration between the two musicians, accompanied by drums, bass, and Hammond organ. Pauwels specifically composed the songs with Ribot in mind, resulting in a focus on funky elements, with a touch of Ribot’s Latin influences (from his work as the Prosthetic Cubans) evident in the opening track “Latin Dancer.” Throughout the rest of the album, Pauwels utilizes lengthy melodic lines, often interrupted by Ribot’s signature distorted playing. In some tracks, such as “Release” and “Return,” the Brussels-based leader creates a somber atmosphere that prompts Ribot to showcase his more restrained style rather than his usual fiery solos. For that, listeners should turn to Ribot’s recent Ceramic Dog album “Hope.” While an interesting rarity, perhaps a rehearsal would have been beneficial for their next collaboration.
