The London police are looking into a potential hate crime following an attack and robbery on a young woman of Jewish faith.
Video of the occurrence was shared on the internet following its posting by the local surveillance organization Shomrim.
According to the Metropolitan Police, a 20-year-old was robbed on Rostrevor Avenue in Stamford Hill, north London around 4:30pm on Thursday by two female suspects who fled towards the A10. The victim sustained bruises but did not require medical attention.
The robbery unit, led by DI Mike Herrick, is currently investigating the case. According to Herrick, the woman was extremely frightened and he stated, “This was an appalling incident and a truly terrifying ordeal for the victim, who was fortunate to not sustain more severe harm.”
“We are aware of the psychological effects of these offenses and are providing her with all the necessary support as we strive to identify the perpetrators.”
“We are aware that the incident has been extensively circulated on social media, and realize that there may be increased concerns about the intent of the attack. We will remain open-minded about the motive and maintain a close relationship with the local community to alleviate any anxieties.”
The police department later verified that the person who was attacked is of Jewish descent. They posted on Twitter: “A video of a young Jewish woman being violently attacked and robbed in Haringey yesterday has gained widespread attention this evening.”
“We will not be releasing the complete video, but we can confirm that an investigation is underway.”
“Our team treats all reports of hate crimes with utmost concern and our investigation will thoroughly examine the underlying motivation behind the assault.”
